Dlhé vlasy, brada po pás, nábojnicový pás, basgitara a postoj na „Lemmyho“. Kto by to asi tak podľa týchto indícií
mohol byť? Opis je to vcelku presný a tak by sa pred vami mala stelesniť postava chlapíka, ktorý síce pochádza zo Chicaga, ale už veľa rokov žije v Česku. Jeho meno znie Paul Speckmann, krstný otec death metalu a extrémnej scény ako takej. A pretože Paul je celkom ukecaný borec so svojským zmyslom pre humor (preto som s ním prebehol celkom rôzne témy), robiť tento rozhovor bola doslovne radosť.
Zdarec Paul! Neušlo môjmu pozornému oku, že si prepadol hubárčeniu. Ja osobne síce huby rád jem, ale pretože nechcem nikomu, vrátane seba ublížiť, tak ich zbieranie radšej nechám na povolanejších. Aká je tvoja bilancia? Nikoho si neotrávil? (hehe)
Úprimne, zbieram huby v Česku už 23 rokov! Ak nájdem nejakú divnú, alebo zvláštnu hubu a nie som si ňou istý, spýtam sa na ňu otca mojej ženy a mrkneme do jednej knihy o hubárčení, ktorú mám. Najlepší spôsob ako sa vyhnúť problémom, je zbierať iba niekoľko druhov, ktoré určite poznám. Takže toto je môj zaručený postup, kámo! A z desiatich pokusov sa sedemkrát vrátim s „úlovkom“. Toto je najlepší relax aký som za posledné roky zažil. Bežne chodíme stále na to isté miesto a len málokedy tam stretávam iných ľudí. Je to skvelé mať les 10 minút od domu.
Poďme k hudbe. Sú to cca 4 roky, čo Master naposledy prišli s novým albumom. Je už nejaký nástupca albumu Vindictive Miscreant na ceste?
Áno, samozrejme skúšame nové skladby. Budúci rok vyjde nový album. Koncom januára budeme nahrávať v novej zostave s Nejezchlebom a Bajčim (Awrizis, ex-Arch of Hell…). Napísal som desať skladieb pre ešte zatiaľ stále nepomenovaný album. Naozaj sa nie je kam ponáhľať. Mám za sebou dosť bohatú diskografiu na to, aby boli fanúšikovia mohli byť spokojní.
V medzičase vyšlo niekoľko albumov v reedíciach. Boli už nezohnateľné? Sú na nich nejaké zmeny oproti iným vydaniam? Iné obaly, bonusové skladby atď.?
Hammerheart Records z Holandska v spolupráci s Napalm Records znovu vydali celú diskografiu na CD a začínajú aj s LP. Na budúci rok sú naplánované špeciálne limitované boxsety. Všetky nahrávky boli remastrované z dôvodu čo možno najlepšieho zvuku. Bonusové skladby a živáky budú súčasťou boxsetov.
Na to, že Master majú hlavný stan, čo by kameňom dohodil od slovenských hraníc, tak ste mi nepochopiteľne dlhé roky koncertne unikali. Obrat k lepšiemu prišiel až tento rok, keď som vás konečne uvidel na Obscene Extreme Festivale. Na tomto festivale ste nehrali pekných pár rokov. Môžeš porovnať jeho posun za tie roky?
Toto je nepochybne najlepší česky festival, aspoň podľa mňa. Požiadali nás, aby sme zahrali, iba pár dní pred samotným festivalom (vypadla Pyrexia, pozn. red.). Bola to pocta opäť raz zahrať pre všetkých tých extrémnych fanúšikov, ktorí sa sem každoročne zlietajú. Na Slovensku veľmi často nehráme, akosi nás k vám nevolajú… Snáď sa to v blízkej dobe zmení (Master mali hrať v Šuranoch v roku 2020, ale pretože prišiel Covid a koncerty sa v momente rušili, tak tento osud postihol aj túto akciu… pozn. red.). Master je v týchto dňoch celkom v kurze, takže veci vyzerajú do budúcna celkom sľubne.
Toto leto bolo po dvoch rokoch konečne plné festivalov. S pár známymi sme sa zhodli, že behom tej doby akoby dozrela nová generácia fanúšikov. Vidíš aj ty v publiku mladšie ročníky v porovnaní s dobou predcovidovou?
Áno, samozrejme je skvelé vidieť nadšenú odozvu mladších fanúšikov na staršie kapely! Nová generácia fanúšikov podporuje underground a toto je budúcnosť. Takže sa to musí páčiť, je tak?
V posledných rokoch sa u Master celkom prekopala dlho stabilná zostava. Alex a Zdeněk odišli a nahradili ich Pat Shea a Ruston Grosse. Alex sa po nejakom čase ale opäť do zostavy Master vrátil. Aké boli dôvody týchto odchodov a príchodov?
Hlavné dôvody zmien po šestnástich rokoch boli, ako tomu väčšinou býva – peniaze. Smutné je, že peňazí v undergounde veľa nie je… Väčšina mojich príjmov pochádza z predaja merchu. Takže, keď prišla požiadavka o väčšie peniaze a ja som na to nepristúpil, tak chlapci jednoducho logicky odišli. Do kapely nastúpili Pat Shea a Ruston Grosse. Hrali sme spolu koncerty v Strednej Amerike, Mexiku, ako aj turné po USA a Európe, ale potom svet zasiahol Covid. Hneď po poslednej mexickej zastávke turné. Bola to samozrejme aj otázka cestovania. S Alexom som sa v poslednom čase bavil a keď Peter Bajči videl, že hľadáme nových členov, tak na to zareagoval, no a pridal sa znova aj Alex. Takže stroj sa znova rozhýbal a v marci tohto roku sme odohrali dvanásť koncertov v Španielsku a Portugalsku a k tomu množstvo festivalov a víkendových akcií. Čo sa týka ďalších vecí, tak Master skúša na tom istom mieste ako Shaark, keďže máme rovnakého gitaristu a život beží ďalej. Pradlovský sa živí poctivo a hrá v niekoľkých ďalších kapelách. Všetkým bývalým členom samozrejme prajem všetko dobré v ich ďalších
kariérach a životoch. No a čo sa týka členov z USA, tak tí sa ku kapele s najväčšou pravdepodobnosťou pripoja na turné po Strednej Amerike a Mexiku v júni 2023!
V Česku bývaš už pekných pár rokov. Mal si prehľad o českej, resp. československej metalovej scéne predtým ako si sem prišiel? Ako na teba miestna scéna zapôsobila vtedy a ako ju vnímaš teraz?
Chalanov z Krabathor som stretol až keď išli ako support Master a Malevolent Creation na európskom turné behom 47 dní v starom školskom autobuse. Ale lokálna scéna bola vždy nadupaná. Kapely ako Pandemia, Fleshless, či Hypnos otriasali scénou vtedy, aj teraz.
S Krabathorom si nahral dva albumy. U fanúšikov však v porovnaní s predchádzajúcimi nahrávkami ale nie sú tak populárne, čo je ale pochopiteľné, ak sa zmení človek na tak dôležitom poste ako je spevák. Ako ich vnímaš s odstupom času? Ja osobne som si ich nedávno púšťal a bavili ma.
Myslím, že nahrávky sú to výborné, ale ako si sám povedal, tak ľudia ma jednoducho neprijali. Čo sa dá robiť. Pripojiť sa ku Krabathor bola však tá najlepšia vec, ktorá sa mi kedy mohla stať. V tom čase mi navždy zmenila život. Po 23 rokoch som si tu vydobyl slušné živobytie a hrám iba hudbu, nič iné. Už nemusím riešiť žiadne bočné zamestnania, ani nič podobné. Iba hranie hudby a posielanie balíkov s merchom po celom svete. Kámo, to vôbec nie je zlý život!
Pri Krabathore ešte chvíľu zostanem. Pred pár rokmi odohrali niekoľko koncertov v klasickej zostave s Brunom. Ak by prišla ponuka, aby si sa zúčastnil nejakého koncertu s nimi, išiel by si do toho?
Jasné, že by som do toho šiel, ale to sa nestane kámo, to mi ver. Ale požiadali ma, aby som s nimi išiel na jeden veľký festival a skvele som si to opäť užil.
Čo tvoje ostatné kapely/projekty, sú aktívne? Myslím najmä Abomination a Death Strike. Alebo sa plne sústredíš čisto iba na Master?
Venujem sa už iba čisto Master, ale niekedy raz za čas odohrám s týmito kapelami nejaký koncert, aby som sa o hudbu podelil so starými fanúšikmi, no a aby z toho aj niečo „káplo“.
Behom kariéry ste na albumy Master zaradili aj niekoľko coverov od kapiel a hudobníkov ako Thin Lizzy, Nazareth,
Johnny Cash… Covery si vyberal sám, alebo si si nechával aj od niekoho poradiť, že tá a tá skladba by znela zaujímavo v prevedení od Master?
Všetky tieto klasiky som vyberal sám.
Kedysi si sa venoval aj práci tour manažéra. V súčasnosti už asi na to nemáš čas, alebo sa mýlim? Čo vlastne táto práca obnášala?
Nie, nie, v skutočnosti som bol merch guy. Kedysi som predával mnohým kapelám merch na ich tour a taktiež aj veci od Master. Trvalo to veľa rokov a zažil som veľa turné, ale teraz to už nie je nutné robiť.
Ak by si mal zložiť kapelu snov (môžu byť živí hudobníci, ale aj tí, ktorí nás už opustili), kto by v nej hral?

Hi Paul! It didn’t escape my watchful eye that you fell into mushroom picking. I personally like to eat mushrooms, but because I don’t want to hurt anyone, including myself, I prefer to leave their picking to the more professional. What is
your balance? You didn’t poison anyone? (heh)
Well, in all honesty, I have been picking mushrooms in Czech for 23 years! If and when I find a strange or rare mushroom, I am unsure about, I will speak with my wife’s father as well as look in the special book I have. The best way to avoid this problem is to pick only a few different varieties that you are sure of, so this is my normal course every year my friend! I have gone about 10 times with 7 times a successful hunt and retrieval! This is the best relax I have found over the years, we normally hit the same area as often as possible, and I rarely run into many other people! It’s great to have the forest a 10-minute drive away!
Let’s get to the music. It’s been about 4 years since Master came with last new album. Is there a successor to Vindictive Miscreant on the way?
Yes of course, we have begun rehearsing the new tracks! A new album will emerge next year. We will be recording with the new lineup, featuring Nejezchleba and Bajči in late January! I have written 10 new tracks for the yet untitled album! There is really no hurry in my mind, as I have the previous catalog to keep the fans happy!
I noticed that several albums of yours were released in reissues. Were they already sold out? Are there any changes to them compared to other first releases? Other covers, bonus tracks, etc.?
Hammerheart Records in Holland, along with Napalm Records in cooperation have reissued the entire Master catalog respectively on CD, and LP’s have also begun as well.
LTD edition special boxsets are also set for release next year! All recordings have been remastered to have the best possible sound! Bonus tracks and live recording will be available in the boxsets!
The fact that Master has a main tent, only couple of km from Slovak border, you inexplicably eluded me for many years. The turn came this year when I finally saw you at the Obscene Extreme Festival. You haven’t played at this festival for
quite a few years. Can you compare his progress over the years?
This is is by far the best Czech Festival in my opinion, and we were asked to play just a few days before the fest. So, it was an honor once again to play to the extreme fans that visit every year! We don’t play very often in Slovakia as we are never invited there my friend, hopefully this will change in the near future! Master is very busy again these days, so things are looking up for the future!
This summer was finally full of festivals after two years. A few acquaintances and I agreed that a new generation of fans seemed to have matured during that time. Do you also see younger generations in the audience compared to the pre-Covid era?
Yes of course, and it’s always great to see the younger fans enthusiastic response to the older bands! A new generation of fans are reaching out and supporting the underground and this is the future, so you have to like this, right?
In recent years, Master’s line-up has completely changed. Alex and Zdeněk left and were replaced by Pat Shea and Ruston Grosse. After some time, however, Alex returned to the Master lineup. What were the reasons for these departures and arrivals?
The obvious reasons as always, with the fellas, after 16 years, money became an issue! Sadly enough, the fees are not always greater every year with this underground music, I personally make most of my cash from selling merchandise. So, when the demand for greater fees happened and I didn’t budge, the guys quit. Enter, Pat Shea and Ruston Grosse, we played shows in Central America and Mexico as well as touring the USA, and Europe, and then Covid hit right after the last Mexican trek! It was a question of travel of course! Alex and I had been speaking on and off for the last several years and when Peter Bajči saw I was looking for new band members, he contacted me and Alex also joined the fold! So, the machine began rolling in March this year playing 12 shows in Spain and Portugal, and we have been playing fests and weekend gigs all year! As for reality, life goes on, Master still rehearses at the same place as Shaark as we share the same guitarist, and in all reality it’s water under the bridge, Pradlovsky plays in several bands and makes an honest living as always,. and so do we! I wish all the previous members the best in their endeavors as always. As for the US members, we will most likely join together for a Central American and Mexico tour in June 2023!
You have been living in the Czech Republic for quite a few years. Did you have an overview of Czech or Czechoslovak metal scene before you came here? How did the local scene impress you then and how do you see local scene now?
No, I met the guys from Krabathor when they supported Master and Malevolent Creation on a European tour for 47 days on and old US school bus! The local scene has always been a killer! Bands like Pandemia, Fleshless, and Hypnos rock the scene then and now to be honest!
You recorded two albums with Krabathor. However, compared to previous recordings, they are not as popular among fans, which is understandable if a person in such an important position as the singer changes. How do you perceive them over time? I personally played them recently and enjoyed them.
I think records are killer, but as you said people just didn’t accept me in the fold, so be it. Joining Krabathor was the best thing that ever happened, at the time it changed my life for good. After 23 years I have forged a good living, and I only play music, nothing else! No side jobs here anymore, only playing music and shipping packages across the globe weekly, not a bad life at all my friend!
I will stay with Krabathor for a while. A few years ago, they played several concerts in a classical line-up with Bruno. If an offer came to play some concerts with them, would you go for it?
Sure, I would have but this didn’t happen brother, no worries. But they did ask me to go along for the big festival show and I had a blast hanging with the band again!
What about your other bands/projects, are they active? I mean Abomination and Death Strike in particular. Or do you fully concentrate only on the Master?
I only concentrate on Master, but from time to time I play shows with these bands to share the music with old fans and of course make some hard earned cash!
During your career, you also included several covers from bands and musicians such as Thin Lizzy, Nazareth, Johnny Cash on the Master albums… You chose the covers yourself, or you got advice from someone that this and that song would sound interesting to performed by Master?
I chose those classics myself my friend!
You used to work as a tour manager. You probably don’t have time for that now, or am I wrong? What did this job entail?
Nope I used to be a merchandiser actually! I used to sell for many bands on tour as well as sell Master products!
This lasted many years and many tours, I had a blast, but now it’s not neccesary!
If you were to form a dream band (can be live musicians, but also those who have already left us), who would play in it?
